12 Days of World Juniors: Day 11 - Double Dion, 2005 Grand Forks

(Andrew Yang/The Intermission)

The year was 2005. Canada was playing Russia in the gold medal game. Canada boasted one of the best World Juniors rosters of all time, featuring big names such as Sidney Crosby, Patrice Bergeron, Mike Richards, Corey Perry and so many more. Because of the 2004-2005 NHL Lockout, Canada could bring a star studded team to the tournament. This was arguably the best team to ever be sent to the World Juniors.

Late in the second period, Canada was leading over the Russians 3-1. Russia was breaking into the Canadian defensive zone until Dion Phaneuf came across the blue line and proceeded to lay two Russians out with a body check at the same time.

Then came one of the most famous play calls in hockey history ever by Pierre McGuire.

“IT’S A DOUBLE DION!”

This led to Crosby leading the break down the ice and generating a rebound off his shot that bounced right to Bergeron. Bergeron tapped in the rebound into the open net, and Canada had taken a 4-1 lead.

Canada went on to win the game 6-1, claiming another gold medal for the nation. The Canadians went undefeated in this tournament.

Pierre McGuire’s “Double Dion” call lives to be one of the most entertaining plays by any hockey player in the history of the sport.

Sure, it’s just a hit. But this is a moment Canadians will never forget.

Long live the Double Dion, one of the greatest moments in World Juniors history.
